The Grant Janszen Scholarship Fund

Awarded by the St. Joseph Boosters Organization

This Scholarship Fund has been established to award financial assistance to St. Joseph Grade School student athletes in furthering their secondary education at a parochial high school. The scholarship, originating in June, 2004, is named for Grant Janszen, whose courage and perseverance is an example to all.

Beneficiaries
St. Joseph School 8th graders who have been accepted at a parochial high school and participate in the school’s sports programs.

Two scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded; one each to an outstanding male and female student athlete.

Two scholarships of $500 will also be awarded; one each to the second place female and male student athlete.

Included in the application is a topic for an essay that each student will be asked to write. The essays will be written at St. Joseph Library in April – no essays will be accepted other than those written at that time. The topic is provided only to allow students an opportunity to prepare.

Process for Awarding

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of three measures; grades, essay and participation in St. Joseph Boosters sponsored sports.

Grades – Student’s overall grade percentage at the time of evaluation will be divided by a factor of 9. Each Student is requested to supply a copy of their third quarter report card the day of the essay.
     Total Points Available 11.1 pts.


Essay - Essays will be submitted anonymously to three individuals outside the parish for evaluation. Essays will be scored as follows –
     1st 8pts., 2nd 5 pts; all others 3 pts.

Sports Participation - Students will be awarded one point for each year they participated in a St. Joseph Sponsored Sport (select teams will not be included).
      8 pts. Maximum

Points will be totaled and the male and female student athletes with the highest totals will be awarded the $1,000 scholarships, while the male and female athletes with the second highest totals will be awarded the $500 scholarships. Presentation of the scholarship will be made at 8th Grade Sports Banquet on May 11th.
